Training in the crisis: Don't let up now!

BDA AGENDA 03/21 | TOPIC OF THE WEEK

Despite the Corona pandemic, young people's chances of finding a training place continue to be good: In the follow-up placement, 74,600 registered training places were available for 76,600 registered applicants. The number of registered applicants also includes the approximately 20,000 persons who have already found an alternative and continue to wish to be placed. Good opportunities for young people are also emerging for the coming training year. In January, 1.37 training places were available per applicant. The reason for this is that the number of registered applicants (- 11.3 %) fell even more sharply than the number of training places registered (- 8.3 %). The challenge for companies to find suitable young people for their training places is becoming even greater.

For the 2021/22 training year, the following applies: training must be maintained wherever possible despite economic challenges. A powerful new start after the crisis will be facilitated if a young, well-trained generation participates in all areas of our social and economic life. The more companies provide their own training for future skilled workers in the coming year, the more successful this will be. The federal programme "Securing Training Places" can provide support in this regard. It is more important than ever to address young people at an early stage. The lack of vocational guidance services at schools due to the pandemic and the limited personal access to vocational guidance/training placement services currently make this a challenge. However, young people can also be won over to training in digital communication formats that provide insights into the world of work or at virtual career guidance fairs.

Young people should also not wait and see, but should take advantage of the many opportunities for practical training in the company and actively plan their future. In addition to the career counsellors at the Federal Employment Agency, teachers and parents are also called upon to provide support.
