In view of the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, Employers' President Dr. Rainer Dulger explains:
Reunification has shown us how much potential there is in Germany if we work together
Berlin, November 8, 2024: "The fall of the Berlin Wall and reunification are the finest moments in German history of the 20th century. Democracy and the social market economy have proven to be the more humane and economically successful system, superior to dictatorship and the planned economy. As a system with radiance: the people in the East opted for freedom and prosperity.
Reunification has shown us how much potential there is in Germany if we work together. And on the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, I say this firmly to the populists and extremists on the left and right who want to undermine parliamentary democracy, destroy our ties to the West and destroy the European Union: The majority of this country wants to continue to live in freedom, peace and prosperity.
A look back at the years of change in 1989/90 should also show us: What initially seems unrealistic can be achieved if we recognize the signs of the times and take action. The recession is not a God-given plague that has come upon our country. Germany is a strong country with strong companies and efficient and creative employees. Politicians only need to improve the framework conditions in order to free this giant, which is shackled by useless bureaucracy and high costs. Economic success is not an end in itself: only with a successful economy can Germany develop the economic strength to further develop the legacy of unity and remain a strong partner for our friends in Europe."
