Fixed-term employment remains a driver of job creation – hiring barriers must be removed quickly

BDA CEO Steffen Kampeter on the new figures on fixed-term employment released by the Federal Statistical Office:

Fixed-term employment remains a driver of job creation – hiring barriers must be removed quickly

Berlin, 13 August 2026. “The figures published today by the Federal Statistical Office show that companies use fixed-term employment responsibly and with restraint. Fixed-term contracts are not a mass phenomenon; rather, they are an important instrument for helping people into work and making it easier for companies to hire. They often provide young people entering the labour market with their first opportunity to gain employment.

Fixed-term employment can also serve as an important bridge into regular employment for the long-term unemployed, low-skilled workers, and people for whom entering employment is more difficult. It is therefore right that the coalition intends to make fixed-term contracts easier to use and remove existing obstacles. Anyone who wants to bring more people into work should not make it unnecessarily difficult for companies to hire.

It is particularly important that employees should once again be able to return to a former employer on a fixed-term contract. The outdated ban on prior employment must be abolished. The coalition’s intention to make improvements in this area is a positive signal for employees, businesses, and the German labour market.”
