In October 2022, the STEM gap reached a total of around 326,100, one of the highest values for the month of October. Shortages have recently risen sharply in IT occupations and energy and electrical engineering occupations. In the construction sector, shortages are decreasing slightly again. STEM is key to achieving success in transformation processes and ensuring the future viability of our country.Prof. Dr. Axel Pl\u00fcnnecke, Head of the Education, Innovation and Migration Cluster at the Cologne Institute for Economic Research: "Companies expect an increasing demand for STEM talent in order to meet the challenges of climate protection, digitalization and demographic change. In addition, the war in Ukraine and rising energy prices are increasing the pressure to adapt business models. Greater innovation is the key lever for mastering these challenges. 77% of all employees working in research and development have a STEM qualification. Additional innovations are therefore only possible with the right STEM specialists."Indra Hadeler, Managing Director Education and International Relations of the employers' association Gesamtmetall: "60 percent of employees in the metal and electrical industry work in STEM professions. Securing the next generation of STEM talent is therefore crucial for the M+E industry! STEM qualifications also form the basis for the development and production of technical solutions, with which we are setting the course for digitalization and decarbonization and thus for sustainable growth. The M+E industry invests around 101 billion euros in innovation every year - that is 59% of German innovation expenditure. Climate protection and digitalization are becoming significantly more important. We are very concerned that the number of first-year students in STEM subjects has fallen by around 13% in the last five years and that many apprenticeships in STEM professions cannot be filled."Christina Ramb, Member of the Executive Board of the BDA: "STEM professions are particularly attractive. The wages of STEM employees are higher than the average for other professions. More than 60 percent of STEM graduates are educational climbers. Nevertheless, we still lack young talent. It is encouraging that the proportion of women in STEM professions has risen slightly in recent years. However, we cannot be satisfied with this and must step up our efforts to get girls and young women interested in STEM. Without successes in immigration in recent years, there would be a shortage of around 340,000 STEM specialists. In Germany, we need simplified regulations and less bureaucracy when it comes to immigration in order to leverage further potential."Prof. Dr. Christoph Meinel, Chairman of the Board of MINT Zukunft schaffen: "Germany urgently needs to make faster progress with digitalization in education. To achieve this, it is important that digitalization is finally understood and treated as a cross-cutting issue in schools and that we also succeed in getting pupils who are less tech-savvy more interested in digital and IT solutions. Another important step is closing the remaining gaps in digital equipment at daycare centers and schools, providing better support and further training for teachers and developing digital teaching and learning materials."Edith Wolf and Dr. Ekkehard Winter, board members of the National STEM Forum: "The latest comparative tests at schools make it clear that skills are also declining in the STEM subjects and that inequality of opportunity is already increasing so massively in the early phase of many educational biographies that it is hardly possible for a large number of children and young people to continue learning. Targeted catch-up programs and high-quality STEM education in all-day schools must improve educational opportunities and thus opportunities for participation. We have high hopes for the Startchancen program; STEM learning opportunities, including those offered by non-school stakeholders, should play a central role in its design."You can download the full fall report here.
